Hints & Tips
Thinking about Composition.
Sometimes composition is the last thing we think about, if at all. But in order to make an image that is pleasing to the eye and has an interesting aspect to it, composition should come right at the front of our other considerations. Sometimes it is difficult to think about it in the heat of the take, but it is certainly worth making the effort. Here are a few ideas gleaned from a recent photography course.
Series and patterns provide harmony and make a powerful impact. Be on the lookout for these. Remember, it is good to have only odd numbers of items where there are less than ten and three is very effective.
Angles are great to use, too. Each one of the 360 degrees – up, down, zero degrees and the reverse – can be employed with considerable impact. Watch for these.
Parts suggest more. Think of having just a few in a series to suggest the whole, only part of a face illuminated to appreciate the rest, and three or more at the edge of the herd suggests the whole herd.
Horizons can have an important effect. Consider its position. Low indicates more space, high draws the viewer into the distance, middle brings the background closer.Think about what the message is.
Secondary objects placed outside the main theme and close to the rule of thirds positions will give some additional impact.
Triangles can be very effective. When photographing groups of objects or people, make sure to place the participants so that a triangle is achieved.
Perspective can make all the difference. Closer things will appear larger, and perspective gives a feeling of motion and draws the eye in that direction.
Those are just a few thoughts intended to help get a strong reception to an image. There is so much to consider before capturing it – and remember the saying “Practice makes Perfect!” Happy shooting!
